ODMHA Minutes of March 8th Meeting 2008

The meeting was held at Green Bay Morgans in Beaverdam. Once again the club thanks Beryl and Bob Herzog for letting us use their beautiful facilities.

It was called to order by President Pam Thomson.

The Treasurer Josie Thomas reported that we have $5,400 in our account.  She also mentioned that not many dues have been sent in yet for 2008.  She said the next big expense we have coming up is our insurance policy renewal.  We had $10,000 in our money market account also, but had to transfer $5,000 out to cover losses from the Fall Show.

It was announced that the date for our Spring Show has been set for Sunday June 8th at Rosemount Farm in Spotsylvania.  This will be a family horse show and fun day.  It is open to all breeds and will include a dog show at lunch as well as activities for non riders.

Classes will be $5 each or $50 for the whole day and stalls are available.

A large part of the business meeting was spent discussing our new Futurity, which will be held at the State Fair this year on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 on October 5th.  Prior to the futurity classes, we will have a demonstration of Morgan versatility.  Sandy Monolo will coordinate this.  Stalls will be available for $25 to $30, for those who want them.  There will be no charge to us to have the Futurity as part of the State Fair.  Forms to register your horses for the futurity, along with the rules are on our Web page odmhamorgans.com.  Any changes to the rules will be made by a vote of the committee which consists of  Byran Childress, Beryl Herzog, Mary Ann Massie, Lynn Ramsey, Nancy Brooks and Sandy Monolo.

It was pointed out that you have to be a current member of the ODMHA to register a horse.

Lillian Thomas made a pitch for everyone to send in their points for the year end awards.  The club decided last year that we would not charge extra to participate in the high points awards competition, so all people need to do is send their points to Lillian.  Remember that you can also contribute hours spent riding your horse in non show situations for our local version of the Morgan Pathways program.

Pam Thomson reported for the Fall Show Committee that planning for the Fall Show is well underway.  Tom Thomas has taken over selling advertising and sponsorships, and wants to let it be known that the inside covers of the Prize List are available for a price.  He can be reached at 540-729-1526 or Dtomsfam@aol.com.  Everyone is encouraged to try to go out and sell sponsorships.  It was suggested that we put the Sponsorship form on the Web page.  Pam also stressed that we need lots of volunteers.

She stressed that the committee is looking for ways to cut back on costs for the show.  One thing we will do is to not have live music this year, since the announcer has a tape that we can use.  The Dressage classes will be Morgan only, which saves us needing to hire a technical delegate. The show will be in the Coliseum again this year, since that is not  much more than the other arena.  The show will run August 23rd -25th, with classes not starting till Friday night.  People asked why we couldn’t move back to Labor Day, and it was explained that we are locked out of that weekend at the Horse Center because of the large Quarter Horse show.

Martha Allen had been tasked over the summer to research how much it would cost to get a new banner for the larger space.  She checked different sites on the internet, and figures that we could get a banner for $500 -$600.  We tabled ordering anything new for the time being.

Kathy Freise mentioned that she is working on getting a Spring Newsletter out, and asked people to send her Farm news.  Mary Ann will send her an article about the Futurity.

Beryl Herzog spoke up for the Virginia Horse Shows Association and urged people to join it.

She also mentioned that the Board had agreed to sponsor a stall at the new State Fair Grounds.  Stalls will cost $1,500 and can be paid for over three years.  Sponsors will be mentioned on stall plaques. Mary Ann Massie moved that we sponsor a stall.  Sandy Monolo seconded the motion.  The motion was voted on and approved.

We then went over the calendar:

April 12th at Kathy Freise and Mark Atkinson’s – with Dawn Cooper as speaker

May 17th – a Dressage Fix a test clinic at Sharon Smith’s

June 8th – The Fun Show

July 12th – Picnic at Edgemont.

August 23-25 Fall Show

September 20th – Ride to Music clinic at Pam Thomson’s

October – The Virginia Equine Extravaganza – Sandy Monolo will coordinate our participation.

There being no other business, Kathy Freise moved to adjourn and Nancy Brooks seconded.

Meetings/Events 2007

Minutes of the ODMHA July 14th, 2007

The meeting was held at Edgewood Farm in Beaverdam., and was well attended with over 20 members present.  It was called to order by President Sandy Monolo.

The minutes of the last meeting could not be read because the Secretary had brought the wrong folder.  Sandy pointed out that they are on the website, www.odmhamorgans.com and people should read them there.

Futurity Report

Beryl Herzog gave a report on the Futurity.  She passed out copies of the forms we had used in the past.  She tested these on a member who had never seen one, and she felt they were easy to understand so Mary Ann Massie will retype them putting in the new fees.  Once they are done they will be put on line, but people will be able to request hard copies if they wish. The new Futurity will start in 2008.

AMHA Report

Loretta Brown, who is an at-large member of the AMHA Board reported on AMHA activities.  The Registry is doing well financially and will soon be available on line to look up horses and their pedigrees.  Since this was quite expensive to set up, there will be fees for using this service. Loretta stated that this should be practically real time, with a horse that is registered one day, being on line the next.

She also stated that the AMHA had a few more expenses than expected this past year, largely due to the search for a new director.  They are working on the 2008 budget now, and will have to make some cuts.  They will meet in Buffalo in August to discuss the budget.

Nominating Committee Report

The nominating committee is made up of Mary Ann Massie and Byran Childress.  Mary Ann reported that they have had trouble filling the positions of President and Secretary.  Sharon Owen has agreed to run for Vice President, Josie will stay as Treasurer and Byran Childress and Sandy Monolo will fill in the vacant Board positions. After much discussion from the floor, Pam Thomson agreed to run for President, and Kathy Freise volunteered to run for Secretary again if no one else stepped forward.  The officers will be elected at the annual meeting in November, at which point nominations will be accepted from the floor.

Show Committee Report

Karen Sansom gave the report.  She explained that the committee had only mailed prize lists to those who had shown the last two years.  Any one else who would like one can get one on line from our web page.  The limited mailing was one way to save money, which is important since we are moving to the Coliseum at the Horse Center this year, which is more expensive.

Karen also pointed out that Dressage, Carriage and Trail will all be open classes this year.  This year the Trail classes will be “Opportunity Classes, which is a new option from USEF.  This means that if exhibitors are only coming to the show to do Open Trail classes they will not be required to pay the usual USEF fees.  This would make them eligible for AMHA Open Points, but not for USEF Points.  It is hoped that this will encourage more trail participation.

Entries for the classes close August 1st, though late entries will be accepted for an additional fee.

It was also stressed that we will need more volunteers than ever this year, and everyone was encouraged to solicit both class sponsorships and raffle items.  Champion Sponsorships will be $100 and regular classes will be $25 with 2 offered for $40.

Treasurer’s Report

Josie Thomas reported that we have $9,883.62 in our money market account and $7,165.99 in the regular account.  $1,302.00 of the money in the regular account belongs to the youth group.  Expenses since the beginning of the year have included $600 to set up the new web page plus $19.95 a month to maintain it.  There have also been two newsletters, and our insurance is now up to $1,682 annually.

Karen Sansom made a motion that we put the funds from the money market into a short term CD that would give us better interest, with Josie researching the best place to put them, and making the move after all of the expenses from the Fall Show have cleared.  Beryl Herzog seconded the motion and it was passed.

Old Business

Beryl Herzog wanted to know how many people got the Virginia Equine Survey this year.  Several people indicated that they had gotten it.  She was worried that Morgan representation wouldn’t be high enough, but felt reassured after seeing the responses.

She was asked to report on the State Fair, since she is on the Board.  She said that things are going ahead, and that the Equine facilities would be the first done, but that right now things are on hold while Caroline and Hanover counties figure out what to do with the waste water.  She also said that the Board will be selling naming rights to various venues at the fairgrounds.

It was suggested that we have a speaker from the State Fair speak at our annual dinner, and that we look into the possibility of holding a meeting at the Mansion at the fairgrounds.

New Business

Karen Sansom pointed out that the Banner we have been using for the Fall Show picture backdrop will not be big enough to really show in the Coliseum.  She said that MID A had a sign that was at least 8 feet tall and 12 feet wide.  There was discussion on what we could do, but it was agreed that there really isn’t enough time to do anything for this year, so it was moved by Mary Ann Massie and seconded by Dutch Dorschel that we will go with what we have for 2007, possibly putting it on one of the coliseum walls for better effect.  We will study our pictures compared to Mid A’s and will consider getting a new sign for 2008.  Martha Allen agreed to research possibilities and costs.  This motion passed.

Loretta Brown made a motion that the club donate money to the fund to help Shelly Temple (a club Board member) defray the costs of taking her Morgan to the World Pony Driving Championships in Denmark.   Various amounts were discussed, but it was finally moved that we donate $250.  Kathy Freise seconded this and it was passed.

Beryl Herzog moved to adjourn the meeting.  Byran Childress seconded, and the business part of the meeting was adjourned.

The members then had potluck lunch, and a raffle of baked goods and fruits of the season that raised $203.  We also had a chance to meet new members Jeri and Ralph Stallard who recently moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania with their Morgans.  Then we heard new member Dawn Cooper explain the Equine myotherapy services that she will be offering next weekend, with the proceeds also going to Shelly’s fund

Minutes of the April 14th 2007 ODMHA meeting

The meeting was held at Green Bay Morgans, during the lunch break for the Desensitization Clinic with Steve Schwartz.

The minutes were approved with no changes.

There was no Treasurer’s report since the Treasurer could not attend.

Sandy Monolo gave a report from the Show Committee.  She announced that the Dressage Judge will be Carter Bass.  The Carriage Judge is still to be determined.  She also reported that the committee has decided that while doing the schedule, they will leave a few classes TBD.  If someone wants a class that is not already on the schedule they could pay $75, and we would add the class to the program.  They would have to guarantee at least three entrants in the class.  The committee felt that this would take care of some of the last minute requests for classes we have had in the past, and also raise a little money.

The Futurity was the next item of business.  The Board of Directors had already approved reinstating the Futurity at their January meeting. Mary Ann Massie moved to authorize the futurity committee to move forward to operate a futurity starting in the 2008 year.  This motion was passed.

Sandy suggested moving our next meeting from the Fix-it Clinic to a separate date.  July 14th was an open date, and she volunteered to host a picnic meeting at her Grandparent’s farm in Beaverdam.  This has a pool, and a picnic area.  This meeting would combine business with a chance to just socialize.  It was suggested that we include a bake sale/raffle of the “fruits of summer” using seasonal produce or recipes, with the proceeds going to the club.  The change of the meeting date was enthusiastically approved by those present.

Sandy reminded people of the upcoming trail ride on May 12th, and also reminded people to send in their information for the new roster.

It was pointed out that the nominating committee still needed a chair person.  Mary Ann Massie agreed to be the chair.  Byran Childress had also agreed to be on the committee.

Beryl Herzog announced an upcoming Dressage clinic she will be hosting on May 5th and 6th with Jean Claude Racinet.

The meeting was then adjourned.

May 12, 2007 - Trail Ride at Belmead Stables and Riding Club,

ODMHA Trail Ride at Belmead Stables and Riding Club, Powhatan  VA.

ODMHA member Shelly Temple arranged for the club to have access to Belmead Stables and Riding Club in Powhatan for a trail ride.  While our numbers were small our enthusiasm and appreciation were GREAT.  ODMHA members Lynn Ramsey and her horse "Grace", Nan Bodine and her horse "Monkey", Kathy Budner and her horse "Joy", and Mary Ann Massie and her horse "Questar" set off for a ride along the James River.  It was spectacular.  Thousands of acres, miles of trails, no hunting, much of the property in conservation easements - it was perfect!  We walked and talked and practiced "whoa" in the shade along the river - the view of the river was super.  There are picnic areas along the banks and a great picnic area at  the trailer area.  So at the end of our ride we sat along side of the trailers and had lunch.  Sorry you missed it!

September 22, 2007 - Ride To Music Workshop

The Old Dominion Morgan Horse Association sponsored a “Ride to Music” workshop with Michael Matson on Saturday, September 22 at Green Bay Morgans in Beaverdam, Virginia.  The event was well attended by participants and auditors and was deemed a great success!

Our riding teams were Temple Joyce and Green Bay Elegance; Cara Carne and Green Bay Yankee Bob; Kimberly Lawrence and Crosslane Piper Ashlea; Mary Ann Massie and Green Bay Questar; and Beryl Herzog and Green Bay Singleton.

Mike worked with each team individually and the auditors were an active part of the music selections.  Beginning with a metronome Mike determined the beat per minute for walk, trot, and canter (or as our western team demonstrated walk, jog, and lope).  He has over 1,000 pieces of music categorized by beat per minute.  So he quickly selected eight to ten songs for each gait and the teams “danced” away.  It was great fun to see the horses respond to different pieces of music, especially interesting from the auditor’s position.  The rider needed to enjoy the music but in the end it was the horse who determined what piece of music was particularly “inspirational”.

As the 90 minutes lesson drew to a close Mike provided a package with CD title and song selection information, his business card for questions, a list of references for choreography, and US Dressage Federation information.  Mike remained as enthusiastic for the last rider as the first, kept the auditors totally involved in the process, and really enjoyed the day as much as the ODMHA did.

Our thanks to Bob and Beryl Herzog for their continued hospitality in the use of the indoor arena AND their home for a pot luck lunch.
