December 2009

We hope everyone and their horses had a Happy Holiday Season, and we wish everyone a good New Year.

Annual Meeting

The club held its Annual Meeting at the Meadow Event Park on November 14th.  We had a good turnout, including several new members, who we were happy to see.  For many of our members, it was their first opportunity to see the new Equine facilities at the Meadow Park and everyone enjoyed the tour and the chance to ask questions of Lesa Williams the General Manager.   There is some concern that the Park does not yet have a covered arena, but members agreed that it would be a good, central location for future horse shows.

The Horse Show was the major topic of discussion at the Meeting that followed the tour.   There was a lot of support for doing some kind of show, but there were valid concerns over the higher cost of putting on an A rated event.  When it came time to vote, the proponents of doing an A rated show narrowly beat out those who wanted something less ambitious and expensive.  It was however decided that the club would leave it up to the Show Committee to decide if an A rated show is something we can take on.

Brooke Logan volunteered to chair the Show Committee.  People who were interested in serving on the committee gave her their names.  She called a meeting of the group for Saturday December 12th at the Rockville Public Library. There will be a report on this meeting in next month’s column.

If anyone has ideas for the Show or fund raising ideas, please contact Brooke at ODMHA@hotmail.com.  Please put “Show” in the subject line.  Brooke has also taken over our web site, and we thank her for setting up this new club e-mail account.

The meeting ended with our Year End Awards.  These will be reported in a later edition of the Horse Journal.  We give special thanks to Lillian Thomas, our Awards Chair who did a great job, handling things very efficiently and getting the ceremony done in record time.  She was ably assisted by her niece, Mya Ordonez, who is getting quite experienced at passing out ribbons.

New Officers

The slate of officers reported in last month’s column was accepted unanimously.  They are:  President - Beryl Herzog of Beaverdam, Vice President – Martha Allen of Montpelier, Secretary-Timmerie Cohen  of Richmond, Treasurer- Josie Thomas of Warrenton, Reporter – Kathy Freise of Beaverdam, and Board Members at Large, Pam Thomson of McLean, Sharon Smith of Rockville and Donna Jacobsen of White Marsh.  The Board usually meets in January to plan activities for the year, so if you have anything you would like to see the club do, please contact one of them, or send your suggestions to ODMHA@hotmail.com.

Roster

Martha Allen and Beryl Herzog, of the Roster Committee, have been very busy compiling the information for our updated Roster.  Martha Allen deserves extra thanks for wading through less than perfect handwriting to put together the lists of everyone’s horses.  She hopes to have the Roster ready sometime in early February.  Go to our website, odmhamorgans.com for more information on the Roster, including when it will be ready and how it can be obtained.

Membership Renewal

Finally, please remember that it is time to renew your membership for 2010.  Rates and membership forms can also be found on the website.
